Background: This gene encodes a member of the claudin family. Claudins are integral membrane proteins and components of tight junction strands. Tight junction strands serve as a physical barrier to prevent solutes and water from passing freely through the paracellular space between epithelial or endothelial cell sheets, and also play critical roles in maintaining cell polarity and signal transductions. This gene is intronless and is clustered with CLDN8 on chromosome 21q22.11. [provided by RefSeq, Jun 2010],
Function:function:Plays a major role in tight junction-specific obliteration of the intercellular space, through calcium-independent cell-adhesion activity.,similarity:Belongs to the claudin family.,
Subcellular Location:Cell junction, tight junction . Cell membrane ; Multi-pass membrane protein .
Expression:In the kidney, expressed in the proximal tubule and in the Henle's loop. In the distal convoluted tubule, not expressed in all tubules. Not detected in the collecting duct (at protein level).
